  • More birdwatching news!

A lone waxwing spotted in the village this morning. But these punky wee birds usually flock. So has anyone seen his friends? They are famed for stripping trees of their fruit, so do keep an eye out if you’ve still got any berried branches in your garden!

Here’s two photos of our resident woodpecker sent in by Phillip White. Pretty well camouflaged in the branches…

  • Success for star performers

Congratulations to all the Garvald children performing in the excellent show ‘Olivia’ by Yester Primary School years P4-7 last Wednesday and Thursday, performed with great panache in the grand surroundings of Loretto School Theatre. The play was filled with drama, comedy, songs and surprises and was enjoyed by parents, siblings, grandparents and friends alike. Well done to all!

  • Keeping it in the family!

February 100 Club winners are as follows …

    • 10, Connel McGregor; and
    •  8, Caroline McGregor

    … congratulations to you both!

  • Birdwatching news…

Here’s some photographs of the lovely group of Long-tailed Tits that many of you will have spotted in your gardens, with their very long tails and distinctive black, brown and white colouring.

On another note… the snowdrops are out, the birds are singing, the daffodils are getting ready to flower and the sun is shining! Spring is around the corner. The plant sale is on Sunday 5th May, a while away yet, but while you are planning your gardening activities for the year please remember to set aside any spare plants or sow a few extra seeds in the coming weeks so that we will have plenty of donated plants to sell. Thank you!

  • Zumba and Pilates …

A quick reminder to all the fitness fiends that exercise classes recommence next week, Zumba at 7pm on Monday 18th and Pilates at 6.30pm (and 7.30pm) on Tuesday 19th.

  • GVHT Meeting on Wednesday 13th February – POSTPONED!

Just to let GVHT committee members know that tonight’s meeting has been postponed – due to the inclement weather, and apologies occasioned by half term. Sincere apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause … February’s meeting will now take place next Wednesday (20th) at 7pm in the Hall meeting room. Hopefully a near to full compliment of members will be able to make it then.

  • Lots of snowdrops …

… a few primroses and the odd aconite. But has anyone seen a Daffodil in bloom yet? The first person to report one in the Garvald area wins a (small) prize. And no sticking a cut flower from Tescos in the ground and sending us a pic of it!!!

  • House break-in: remember to keep your homes, sheds and cars locked

A house in the village was broken into between 25th January and 2nd February. If anyone saw anything suspicious during this time then please contact the police (PCC Steven Dick, 0131 654 5560). If you are concerned about home security, you can contact the police to arrange a crime prevention survey to help make your home as secure as possible.

  • No pilates on Tuesday 4th February …

Unfortunately, Sue is having to cancel this week’s pilates classes. Given it’s half term the following week, the next sessions will be on Tuesday 19th February at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

  • Mini-plough?

A suggestion has been made about improving road and pedestrian access in the snow and whether the community should look into grant applications (e.g. Crystal Rigg) to fund a mini plough for pavements, side roads, the village hall driveway etc. This is a project for the GMCC to discuss and research but if anyone has any comments or alternative suggestions to help keep all areas of Garvald accessible in the snow, please send them in via the Contact Us page and they will be passed on to the Community Council.
