  • Need to let off some steam this Christmas week?

Well remember that the Hall has a full size tennis table for hire! Why not challenge the (grand) children? Have a family Olympics, in fact?! Run around, safe in the knowledge you wont have to splash through surface water and into a gale force headwind … For more info, click here. And ping-pong away!

  • Village Hall Notice Board …

Unfortunately the Notice Board outside the Village Hall has been damaged beyond repair in the recent gales. This was a very useful asset to the village, not only for Hall business, but being opposite the play park, it kept visitors to the Village informed of what is happening in the area.

There is a long tradition in the village of local craftsmen making notice boards, e.g. the late Mr Kelly made the board which has just been damaged whilst Mr Marwick renovated it, and Mr Cunningham, who farmed at Tanderlane, made the one at the Church gate.

If there is someone with the talent to make something to replace what we have just lost, the Hall Committee would be delighted to hear from them with a view to discussing the cost of materials etc.  Please contact Hazel Clark if you have any ideas, or know where a second hand weatherproof notice board might be sourced. Many thanks in advance.

  • Season’s Greetings to You All

Season’s Greetings! The Garvald website is now pretty well established, having been up and running since last February. We hope you have found the website, its news blog and our Email Updates service useful. We’d like to thank you for your support and feedback over the past few months and wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

From Heidi, Katy and the rest of the Garvald Web Team.

  • Adaptation of Ian Rankin’s ‘Doors Open’ to be shown on STV on Boxing Day.

The adaptation of Ian Rankin’s novel ‘Doors Open, starring Stephen Fry and Douglas Henshall, is to be broadcast on STV on Boxing Day at 9pm. See if you can spot Garvald’s brief appearance in one or two of the scenes… If you remember, some of the filming was done in and around the Garvald Inn on a rainy day last May.

  • “Oh Christmas tree …

Oh Christmas tree, you give us so much pleasure …!”

Thank-you to all those involved with sourcing, erecting and decorating the village Christmas tree. It looks truly fabulous and will be a superb focal point for carol-ing at 6pm on Monday 24th.

  • Children’s Christmas Party

The Garvald Children’s Christmas Party is on this Friday (21st December) from 3.00-5.00pm in the village hall. Alexander the Great will be entertaining us with his magic tricks and games. Santa will be coming to visit, too.

Entry is £1 per child. Please bring a plate of food nibbles per family. For more information, contact Lorraine.

  • Hogmanay Ceilidh

Make sure you get your tickets before they sell out!

We are lucky to have secured Amy Geddes and the Herring Heids for our Hogmanay Ceilidh this year. Come along to listen to their lively tunes and enjoy some dancing too. Supper is included! If you’d like a wee tipple or two it’s BYOB and glasses. This event is likely to be a popular one so please visit Shirley at Burnbrae and buy your tickets now, to avoid disappointment.

  • Nunraw Dinner: multiple thank-yous!

Many thanks to all those who attended last night’s Nunraw Christmas Dinner. It was an enjoyable night. And not blighted by “extreme” weather for once …  Thanks too to all those who contributed food, drink and/or decorations. And, of course, to John Hughes for giving the vote of thanks … Finally, and most importantly really, thank-you to the Community at Nunraw,  and the Father Abbot in particular, for allowing us all to take over the wonderful panelled dining room of the guest house. There can be fewer more special locations for community festivities! Until 2013 …

  • Mobile Post Office

Just a reminder that the mobile Post Office visits the village hall each Thursday (9-11am). Why not support this local service and avoid driving in the wintry weather – come along and buy your Christmas card stamps and post your Christmas presents.

Last post dates for Christmas delivery are:

    • Second Class – Tuesday 18th December
    • First Class – Thursday 20th December
  • Nunraw Christmas Dinner …

Many thanks to all those who have kindly replied to the invitation to Christmas dinner at Nunraw tonight (Thursday 6th December.)  Here is a reminder of the timings. Drinks from 7pm, with dinner expected about 7.30pm … Let’s hope the snow holds off between now and then, and the wind doesn’t get any stronger! Moreover, fingers crossed everyone is hungry!
