  • New Streetlights

You will have noticed that new streetlights were fitted in Garvald on Wednesday. This is to reduce energy costs and improving lighting. The old sodium lamps have been replaced with low wattage LED fittings that direct the light to the floor, providing pools of white light at street level while minimising light pollution. This will also improve public safety with more lights working effectively due to the use of efficient, long-life bulbs.

  • It’s Chrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrristmas …

Okay, not quite – but the village festive season does kick off with the Christmas Dinner in the Hall tomorrow (Thursday) night from 7pm! Thanks to all those who replied, and offered help in some way. The catering team are currently bringing sprouts to the simmer – you like them yellow and sulphurous, don’t you?! – but look forward to seeing you all there!

  • Poetry Competition Books

The Garvald Children’s Poetry Competition books (containing all entries to the competition) were given to prizewinners, the judge, local schools and Haddington library. One has also gone on the bookshelf at The Garvald Inn for local people to read.

There are a dozen of these books left over and they have been delivered to The Garvald Inn. If you’d like one to keep, please ask for a copy at the pub – but it is ‘first come, first served’ as stocks are limited. A copy of this book is also available online in PDF format, accessible from the Poetry Competition 2015 page.

  • Christmas Dinner: final (ish) reminder …

After those wonderful poems, it seems wrong to post a banal reminder about Christmas Dinner replies. But someone was going to have to lower the tone …

Please, can you post response slips and monies into the black mail box at The Rowans before the end of the week? Many thanks in advance!

  • Third and Final ‘Poem of the Day’

    Garvald Children’s Poetry Competition
First Prize in the 11-12 years category

    Ocean Moonlight

    Little boat, vast ocean
    Cold, calm, gentle motion
    Flickering, flaring
    Soothing, settling
    Little boat, vast ocean

    Tiny stars, giant moon
    Dancing, swirling, darkish loom
    Sharp white, lapping light
    Tiny stars, giant moon

    Little boat, vast ocean
    Deafening silence, faithful motion
    Sharp shadows
    Twinkling turquoise
    Little boat, vast ocean

    Tiny stars, giant moon
    Bright display, blackish loom
    Glowing gas
    Black, blue
    Tiny stars, giant moon.

First Prize in the 9 – 10 years category

I Hate Living in the City

    Light, light in the night,
    Why is it so bright?
I hate living in the city.

    It seems at night,
    That its daylight,
    All the street lamps
    And signs are terribly bright,
I hate living in the city.

I feel like it’s the sun
    It’s so bright,
    I’ve said it twice
    And I’ll say it again
I HATE living in the city.
