What are you doing on Tuesday 17th between 5.30 and 6pm? Why not come and wave a flag for local lad Scott Thomson, who will be carrying the Commonwealth Games Baton from Haddington Police Station to Station Road.

Rumble in the Jumble!
Yes, it’s THAT weekend – the annual village Jumble Sale in aid of Village Hall funds!
Set up in the Hall at 6.30pm tonight/Friday. Volunteers are needed to wrestle with the trestle tables. Please come along if you have a spare few minutes …
Hall open for stock tomorrow/Saturday from 12 till 2pm. Please drop off your donations, and don’t forget to check the Hall’s lost property as anything unclaimed will go into the sale!
And then it’s the big one on Sunday, the sale from 12 till 2pm. Browse for bargains, and pick up some brunch. And when you’ve done that, why not offer to help out? Stalls will need manning for the duration, and then there’s tidying up …
So, let’s get ready to rumble in the jumble – and turn some muck into brass!

Let’s get ready to Jumble …
It is the annual village jumble sale this weekend – the perfect opportunity for you to dispose of those bits and bobs cluttering the house, whilst helping to raise valuable funds for the Hall.
The Hall will be open for donations on two occasions: on Friday evening, between 6.30 and 7.30pm; and on Saturday, from 12 until 2pm. The sale itself is on Sunday, starting at 12 and finishing at 2pm.
If you’ve got a wee bit of free time, why not volunteer to help out? Assistance is going to be needed at set up on Friday and Saturday, and during the event on Sunday. Drop us a line and let us know, or see any member of the Hall Management Committee.

Calling Spring Cleaners!
A reminder that there is spring clean in the Hall this Saturday, 24th May, for which help is needed. If you could spare half an hour or more, please come along at 10am. There’ll be biscuits …
… and if you’re spring cleaning your own home, don’t forget that the Jumble Sale is coming up soon, Sunday 15th June. Please put aside a bag of “stock” or let us know if you’ve got bigger items to dispose of.

If you’re having a clear out, do put aside few things for us – clothes, books, bric-a-brac all gratefully received. Let us know about any bulkier items, and we might be able to help with transport. Many thanks in advance.

Hedgehog Awareness Week: 4th – 10th May 2014
We are very lucky to have an array of hedgehogs in Garvald. A couple were spotted on the green last night. It would be great if they were a breeding pair with hoglets on the way …
… As you may have read or heard in the media, the species is under great threat. Yes, cars are responsible for a large number of hedgehogs’ deaths – but gardens are also an increasingly deadly environment. This year, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society is asking gardeners to do all they can to help the conservation effort, particularly:
- Ensuring there is access into the garden (all that is needed is 5” square gap;)
- Checking areas before strimming or mowing;
- Moving piles of rubbish to a new site before burning it;
- Ensuring netting is kept at a safe height;
- Checking compost heaps before digging the fork in;
- Stopping or reducing the amount of pesticides and poisons used;
- Covering drains or deep holes; and
- Ensuring there is an easy route out of ponds and pools.
There is a vast amount of additional information on the charity’s website, so please click on the link above and have a wee read. Methinks our prickly friends deserve five minutes of your browsing time!

Woodlands Project 2: Feedback – reminder
A message from Karl Ingram and Allan Nicolson:
There is still time to send in your feedback about the two projects making up the proposal for a ‘Woodlands Project 2′. The plan is to fell the remaining monoculture of conifers on the south bank of the Papana Burn and replant with native broadleaved woodland. This would allow more light in to the replanted bank and to the existing woodland next to the park, resulting in a more diverse range of plant and animal life in the area. Also, there is a proposal to remove twelve conifers just above the road bridge, some of which are showing signs of distress and therefore their removal has been recommended. This work would leave the deciduous and monkey puzzle trees space to thrive.
If you have not already sent in your feedback, please fill out the website feedback form so we can get a full picture of all residents’ opinions on this matter. We would like all feedback in by the end of April if possible. Thank you.
