Crystal Rig Funding

Crystal Rig Grant Allocations

Your Community Council has had a busy year in 2016-2017 and we wanted to update you on what the Crystal Rig Fund has been used for.

The following local young people were supported: Aiden & Lucy B, Molly C, Isaac & Daisy, Harry Lee, Conal, Thomas R and Scott T. Our funding aided them in their competitive sporting and educational achievements, enabled two young people to speak at a UK Space Agency Principia conference and provided a musical instrument grant.

Larger projects helped were:

  • Morham Village Hall (repairs to a wall)
  • Morham Hall Refurbishment
  • Morham Treasure Hunt
  • Woodland Project 2 (4 year project)
  • Knox Academy
  • Yester Primary School
  • Garvald Fun Day
  • Halloween & Christmas Parties
  • Garvald & Morham Theatre Trip – over 80 people from both villages travelled to Edinburgh to see Arabian Nights and by all accounts the trip was a great success.
  • Christmas Trees for Garvald and Morham

As you can see a large and varied amount of projects were given support, in total we approved £28,500.00 last year.

We are currently arranging a planning application for a External Defibrillator to be located in the vicinity of the Garvald Public Toilets.

We are looking for any ideas you may have for allocating 2018 funds. We should have a similar amount of money available and any projects that meet the strict criteria will be considered. Please read the Crystal Rig 2018 application form or contact Philip White for more information.

Christmas Theatre Trip 2017

Thanks to Garvald and Morham Community Council, a subsidised trip to the theatre was run on Sunday – an annual Christmas treat! Over eighty people from Garvald and Morham travelled to Edinburgh and the show, Arabian Nights, was great fun.

Garvald to Gifford Core Path Upgrade

The Core Path from Garvald up to the Donolly Reservoir, accessed by the road up to Garvald Mains, has been upgraded with new gates, a bridge over the burn and the whole path is fenced off from the rest of the cattle field. It’s a bit muddy in sections so wellies or walking boots are required at this time of year, but much of the path has been upgraded with fresh hard-core. The route to the reservoir and back makes an nice hour’s stroll for the whole family, or you can walk all the way to Gifford. More information about the route to Gifford can found in the updated Garvald to Gifford path leaflet.

Christmas Theatre Trip

To all Garvald and Morham area residents,

Anna Derricourt is organising another Christmas Theatre Trip, subsidised by the Garvald and Morham Community Council.

There are two show options, both starting at 2pm. The Lyceum show is ‘Arabian Nights’ https://lyceum.org.uk/whats-on/production/the-arabian-nights and the Traverse has a brilliant show, ‘Cinderella’ https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event-detail/1266/cinderella.aspx

Cinderella is a shorter show so there would also be time to add in a visit to the Edinburgh Christmas attractions. Also, there are other events on nearby for under 5s, a Silent Disco (12pm) and Shark in the Park (4pm). The timings don’t work for the planned buses but these events may still be of interest to you.

If you would like to attend, please complete and return the attached form by 3rd November to enable Anna to make the bookings (your tickets are not confirmed until after that).

Woodland Management

Yesterday on the steep bank of the Papana Burn adjacent to the park in Garvald, the young trees received some annual maintenance work. Approximately fifty individual trees required some attention including the straightening of leaning trees, cutting of some intrusive weeds (e.g. gorse / brambles), replacing dead saplings and repairing damaged tubes and stakes. Photos taken by Graham Barnes.

Energy Saving Trust Advice Sessions

Home Energy Scotland are a Scottish Government programme managed by the Energy Saving Trust. They have a network of local advice centres covering all of Scotland and offer free, impartial advice on energy saving, renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste prevention and more.

They are hosting two events in March called “Re-energise your old home” to bring together a range of industry experts to help people reduce heat loss in older homes and explain the benefits of renewable energy. At the event you can listen to short talks from the experts, ask questions and get tailored advice including the latest information on funding.

The events are taking place in Portobello on Tuesday 21 March (6.00-7.30pm) and North Berwick on Thursday 23 March (6.00-7.30pm). If you are interested in attending, you can obtain your free tickets using the links below:
