Two days to go until the Flower Show

It’s time to get your competition baking done and decide what you are going to bring in to Saturday’s Flower Show from your homes and gardens… vegetables, flowers, jams and chutneys, cakes, bakes or crafts. The Flower Show programme is available to download from the GHS page.

If you have time, please do bake a cake, tray-bake or some biscuits for the Flower Show Teas and bring them along on the day. And any assistance with helping to tidy up the tables and chairs afterwards would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Flower Show Teas – helpers and bakers required!

Are you able to help with the Flower Show Teas?

Donations of home baking are most welcome! Please bring donations of cakes, cookies, tablet and tray bakes along to the Village Hall on the afternoon of the Flower Show (Saturday 31st August).

Also, would you or your children be able to help serve teas and clear tables for an hour or so in the afternoon of the Flower Show? Your assistance would be much appreciated. If you have any queries, contact Heidi at 1 Westpoint or use the contact us form.

Flower Show…just a few weeks away

Now’s the time to start thinking about your entries for the Garvald Horticultural Society’s Annual Flower Show on 31st August. Download the Programme here.

Need some ideas to keep your children busy up until the new school term starts? How about getting ahead and preparing some of the competition entries early. The baking entries can’t be made until nearer the time but there’s plenty of other things you can prepare in advance.

Here’s all of the competition classes for children:

UNDER 5 YEARS OLD – ‘My family’ A4 artwork, model animal (e.g. playdough, papier mâché), 2 chocolate crispies, a bunch of flowers in a jam jar.
AGE 5 TO 8 YEARS – A ‘monster’ made from vegetables and plant material, 3 home-made sweets, model vehicle made from household junk, a miniature garden (maximum size 600x600mm), a birthday card, 3 painted pebbles, hand-writing: ‘The Dancing Star’ by Pandora Bannister (text on GHS page).
AGE 9 TO 12 YEARS – Miniature garden (maximum size 600x600mm), an ‘animal’ made from vegetables and plant material, a paperweight, a jam sponge sandwich, a lighthouse, compose a haiku verse, a photograph of an animal.
TEENAGER SECTION – Chocolate cake using the recipe of your choice, design and make an iPod case, an exhibit of vegetables of your own growing, design a homepage for a pop star, 3 decorated cup cakes, a photo collage A4 size.

2013 GHS Show Schedule now available

The 2013 Programme for the 62nd GHS Show has been published.

Have a look through the leaflet and decide which categories of the competition you might like to enter this year. There’s even a new category for you to try: ‘Brewing and Beverages’.

In the children’s section, we have changed some of the competition classes. Some can be completed ahead of time, should there be a rainy day in the summer holidays… Also, please note that the poem to be used for the 5-8 years handwriting competition is on the Garvald Horticultural Society webpage.

Birdwatching news…

Here’s some photographs of the lovely group of Long-tailed Tits that many of you will have spotted in your gardens, with their very long tails and distinctive black, brown and white colouring.

On another note… the snowdrops are out, the birds are singing, the daffodils are getting ready to flower and the sun is shining! Spring is around the corner. The plant sale is on Sunday 5th May, a while away yet, but while you are planning your gardening activities for the year please remember to set aside any spare plants or sow a few extra seeds in the coming weeks so that we will have plenty of donated plants to sell. Thank you!

Save the date(s!)

Here’s an excuse to crack out those shiny new diaries, with (very) advance notice of some popular village events …

  • Plant Sale – Sunday 19th May
  • Jumble Sale  – Sunday 16th June
  • Horticultural Show – Saturday 31st August
  • Christmas Fair – Sunday 1st December

Needless to say, let us know if you’d like to help organise any of the above. Or if you have any bright new ideas for a community get-together cum fundraiser. Many thanks in advance.

Christmas Craft Fair on Sunday

Just a final wee reminder about the Garvald Christmas Craft Fair on Sunday.

Doors open at 12 for you to come and do some relaxed Christmas shopping and enjoy some soup, tea and cake.

There will be a range of hand-crafted goods for sale including patchwork items, bags, soft toys, Fairtrade/Tearcraft gifts, handbags, noticeboards, scarves, tea cosies, cafetiere cardigans, covered notebooks, knitted flower brooches, arm warmers, lavender bags, jewellery and glassware made from recycled glass. Other stalls will include bric-a-brac, Phoenix cards and Save the Children. Hope to see you there!

Garvald Flower Show 2012

The Garvald Horticultural Society Committee would like to thank all those who helped make the 2012 Flower Show a success last Saturday, including those who helped out on the day and all of the competitors. There was an excellent display of flowers, vegetables, baking, preserves, photography and craft exhibits. The local children provided some excellent exhibits, too, especially the miniature gardens. A special thank you goes to the children who helped run the ‘Tea and cakes’ stall.

The Garvald Horticultural Society’s AGM is on Thursday 11th October at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend, so please put this date in your diary and we look forward to seeing you there.
