Horses and ponies being ridden on the roads…

Horses and ponies have their own personalities. That is why it is so important to slow down and give them a wide berth when they are being ridden on the roads.

No rider is ever in complete control at all times. Anything can make a horse spook – a bird, a plastic bag or even an overactive imagination – and they are just as inclined to jump towards a vehicle as away from it.

The situation is made worse by rain, when the roads are wet and there is lying water. No horse likes to be soaked by splash, and they don’t like the sound of it much either.

And it is not just motorised vehicles. Cyclists should also proceed with caution, especially when free wheeling downhill at twice the speed as normal. Never creep up behind a horse, and never underestimate the swooshing sound and effect created as you pass by.

Please forward this message on, post it on Facebook or even re-Tweet. It would be good to remind as many people as possible.

We are supposedly an animal loving nation, so it would be nice to see a bit more love for horses and ponies as they are hacked around the country lanes.

Garvald Bridge Trees Update – July 2015

A message from Karl Ingram:

The trees above Garvald Bridge have now been thinned and tidied up to allow the mature specimen trees room to flourish. This work was funded by the Crystal Rig Windfarm Trust and has allowed us to improve the look of the area whilst removing dangerous branches and dead wood. Some logs and branches have been left at the site for local residents to cut up and use for firewood. Please help yourself.

Upholstery Workshops

A message from Sylvia Murray:

I’ll be running upholstery workshops in the Garvald Village Hall on August 11th, 12th and 13th, from 10am – 4pm. You can learn traditional and modern techniques, and work at your own pace in a friendly and fun atmosphere. Feel free to just pop in for a blether and to see what we do. You never know – you might be inspired! This would be an ideal taster for the upholstery classes run by the Poldrate Arts & Craft Centre which start in September.

Contact Sylvia for further details. Tel: 830 683

Belated thanks …

To all those who supported the Jumble Sale late last month. The profits were split between the Village Hall Trust and the Disaster and Emergency Committee’s Nepal Appeal, with the latter receiving some £350. It never ceases to amaze how cast offs can raise so much money, and allow some good to be done in the world?!

Garvald Bridge Trees Management Update

An update from Karl Ingram:

Planned tree management works on the bank above the Garvald road bridge will be conducted from Monday 20th July. This work was given majority support by village residents through a consultation last summer and thanks to the Crystal Rig Windfarm Fund we are now able to go ahead with this work. Permission has been granted by Nunraw Abbey and an approval notice obtained. A local recommended tree surgeon, Sandy Cassells of Root & Branch Arboriculture in Haddington, will be completing the work. Approval has been given by East Lothian Council to remove 6 Larch (conifers), 1 weak Monkey Puzzle, the juvenile Sycamores beneath the mature Sycamore, the small Elders and the holly saplings (while retaining the holly hedge). The mature specimen Larch and two smaller Larches that are acting as a windbreak will be retained, as will the other deciduous trees and the large specimen monkey puzzle tree. Dead wood will be removed from the mature Elm. On the mature Sycamore, the branch growing to the north (over the road) will be cut back to the trunk. The ivy on several trees will be severed at the base and stripped up to 1.5m. Traffic management should cause minimal disruption, by using men with stop/go signs, and the site will be left in a tidy condition.

Jumble Sale Reminder

In case you’ve not seen all the roadside signs, here’s a quick reminder that the Garvald Jumble Sale is this Sunday, 28th June from 12-2pm! Rolls and teas/coffees will be served. Please donate your unwanted items and come and buy some bargains to help us raise money for the Nepal earthquake appeal. Thank you.
