Update on Church Plans

The Church of Scotland Parishes of Garvald and Morham

As many will be aware, the Church of Scotland are going through a period of significant change throughout the whole of Scotland. The existing restructuring plans, in as far as they affect church property within the parish of Garvald and Morham, are as follows.

Morham Church

This building is being prepared for disposal and will soon be placed on the market for sale.

Garvald Church

The decision to sell Garvald Church will be finalised shortly. It is expected that the building will cease to be used for regular services at the end of 2023.

Garvald Church Stables

The Church of Scotland has decided not to sell Garvald Stables.

Garvald and Baro Glebe Fields

The Church of Scotland has decided not to sell Baro or Garvald Glebe fields. They will continue under their existing agricultural tenancies .

Would you like to see the return of the Christmas Theatre Trip?

For many years we had a Garvald and Morham annual trip to the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh for the Christmas show. Your Community Council would like to know if you would enjoy the return of this trip.

This year’s offering at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh is
The Snow Queen

Aince upon a time, in a world lang forgotten, strange creatures roamed the land…
When the beautiful and fearsome Snow Queen steals young Kei away to her frozen kingdom, she leaves behind the brave and brilliant Gerda, an Edinburgh lass who will stop at nothing to rescue her best friend.
But the Snow Queen has lodged shards of her magical ice into Kei’s heart, turning him cold and mean. Can Gerda, with the help of friends she meets along the way, track her pal through the magical, wintery world of the Snow Queen and melt his frozen heart before it’s too late?
Join us for a beautiful, festive and musical adventure as we follow young Gerda on her quest to save Kei, and the world, from an eternal winter. Snow, songs, ice palaces, and a dazzling pink unicorn awaits!

Tickets are £35- £29 each plus approx £10 each for bus hire, but with Community Council subsidy, each ticket, including return bus travel would be offered at £7.50 per person. You must be a resident of the Garvald and Morham ward and the show is suitable for children over 5 and their families.
This would hopefully be a Sunday matinee in early December, depending on ticket availability.

Please note your interest on this form. Deadline is 21st October.

Garvald: the future of the Glebe Field

On 7th September, a group came together to discuss the situation with Garvald Church, the Stables and the Glebe Field.

The congregation of the church decided at the beginning of September that due to the costs of running the church, it would have to be closed. It is likely, therefore, that the church will be sold. The status of the other 2 assets is uncertain. Villagers may remember plans in the past to build luxury houses at the bottom of the Glebe Field.

The group discussed the potential of a community buy out of all 3 assets.

It was agreed to ask the village whether it supported such a buy out and, if so, what uses could these assets be put to.

The consensus of the meeting was to focus initially on the Glebe Field, to ensure that it was retained for general amenity and recreational use as at present, and to safeguard against development. Other potential uses that would enhance community benefit in the medium to long term could also be looked at.

If you are concerned at the possibility that the Glebe Field might be sold, then please register your concern using the contact form, below. Or, if you have ideas about how the Glebe Field could be used in future to benefit the village, then please also use the contact form:

Garvald Village Hall Coffee Afternoon & Table Top Sale

Following the success of the fundraising coffee afternoon a few months back, Isla has decided to host a second on Sunday 8th October, 2-4pm.

We have decided to combine it with a table top sale.  So, if you have some unwanted items that you have been looking to sell on, why not book a table?  Tables will cost £10 with the proceeds going to the Village Hall funds.  Takings from the sale itself will be kept by the seller.

    FUNDRAISING TABLE TOP SALE

Baking donations for the coffee afternoon would be very much welcomed.  Please contact Shirley on 830270 if you would like to donate.

Tables for the sale can be booked by calling Sarah on 830334.

We look forward to seeing you there!

    Call for Garvald Playgroup Volunteers

Do you live locally to Garvald?
Would you enjoy helping to run our playgroup?
We are a very wee group of volunteers with increasing demands brought by growing families, growing children and their growing schedules!
Having secured further funding to help us keep going with our second year of running, we want to continue to reliably provide the valuable stay and play sessions that so many local families have been taking part in since we began in September last year.
To do this, an extra pair of hands or two to open up the hall, set up the teas, welcome participants and / or tidy and lock up at the end would be hugely helpful.
The playgroup runs every Wednesday from 10am – 12pm during term time in Garvald Village Hall.
If you are interested in either helping on a regular basis, or being ‘on call’ for the days when illness/ emergencies strike at the last minute and none of us can make it in that week, please let us know via the contact form, or come along to the hall during playgroup to see what it’s all about and chat over a cup of tea.
Many thanks, Natasha, Chiara and Sofia.
