Missing Cat – Garvald

Missing: long grey haired, female cat, lives at Ashley Cottage and answers to Katty (our daughter named her when she was 2!). Went out in the afternoon of 16th December and hasn’t come back. She’s been out for an unusually long time.

    Thanks for Rockin’

Thanks to everybody who came out yesterday and contributed in any way to our Christmas event. It was great to feel part of a small community again (although slightly scary to see so many people in one place, even if it was outside!) A special thanks and welcome to all the newcomers. For those of you who are ill or vulnerable and couldn’t join us – we missed you.

Thanks to Peter and Elaine for delicious soup and mince pies.

Thanks to our Buskers in the bus-shelter and and the Little Drummer Boy in the van

Thanks to Murray and Tracey for the use of their gazebo – it will probably never be quite the same again.

Thanks to Liz for masterminding the whole thing, and particularly the wooden decorations for the tree – there are more available from Kirklands, beside the Church.

Thanks for all the raffle prizes and your enthusiastic participation in that activity – we raised a stunning £264.80 for Crisis, the homeless charity.

Wishing everyone a very Happy and Healthy Christmas.

PS Watch this space for the photos.

          Christmas Theatre goes online

In the absence of the usual Family Christmas Theatre trip we’re posting information about some of the alternatives available to watch at home this year:

We usually go to the Lyceum Edinburgh, they are offering Lyceum Christmas Tales

On 1 Dec, a free 15 minute Christmas story will appear on The Lyceum Website for families to share at bedtime. Then, a brand new story will appear every other day until the 16th of December – 8 free stories in all. You can visit us here to watch them on the website as they appear or sign up to receive them by email. The final 4 Christmas Tales will be performed together in a special live show with musical interludes on a transformed Lyceum stage between 16-20 December, £10.

          Other options:
All available free to stream at home but please do consider donating if you can.

National Theatre of Scotland – Rapunzel

          Brunton Theatre – Rapunzel

          Fire-raising Incidents

          Fire-raising Incidents

In recent weeks there have been two fire-raising incidents in and around the village hall. The first involved the contents of a bin outside the hall being set alight on the evening of 5th November. At the time it was not clear whether this was deliberate or accidental.

On Wednesday evening (25th November) at approximately 5.45pm a fire was deliberately started in the bin in the gents toilet inside the hall. At the time the hall was occupied by a drama class involving 15  six to eight year old children and their two teachers. The fire generated significant smoke and resulted in the fire alarm activating and the hall being evacuated. Although the evacuation was undertaken quickly and efficiently both the children and their teachers were understandably distressed.

The police attended the incident. They gathered evidence and took statements. They will now undertake further enquiries in an effort to identify the person or persons responsible. If you have any information that may assist them in their enquiries please contact the police.

In an effort to prevent any further criminal incidents the installation of surveillance cameras will be considered.

Raising funds for Garvald Village Hall through Amazon Smile

As shared previously, we have been looking for innovative ways to raise funds for the Village Hall during these challenging times, whilst complying with the latest Government regulations.

Thanks to Amazon, we have the perfect opportunity to enable us all to raise money for the Hall from the comfort of our own homes by investing only 5 minutes of time.

As a registered charity, the Garvald Village Hall Trust can take advantage of the Amazon Smile scheme whereby a small percentage of every purchase you make from Amazon will be donated to the Hall. Amazon has donated £4.6million to charities across the UK through Smile since it was launched. Specifically:

          • Amazon donates 0.5% of every purchase to the hall, paid on a quarterly basis. Collectively, across the village, this could raise a decent amount.
          • This does not impact the pricing of things you buy on Amazon
          • No details of an individual’s purchases or names are shared in the reporting to the Hall: its simply the number of registered users, number of items contributing to the donation and the monetary value.
          • The income will be reported at the Hall Committee meetings and in the Annual Accounts, open to all to view.

To participate takes no more than 5 minutes:

          • Register at: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ch/SC011718
          • For a web browser on a computer, always use https://smile.amazon.co.uk when buying from Amazon
          • On the mobile app:
            • For Android, go to settings and tap the button for Turn On AmazonSmile
            • For Apple, the app cant be used at the moment, but there is an alternative you can set up a shortcut to the Amazon Smile website which gives a near identical experience to the app. It’s very quick and easy to do:
              • If you have the Amazon App installed, please remove it. To do this, tap and hold the app icon until it starts to jiggle. Tap the cross at the top left of the icon and confirm that you want to delete it. Don’t worry, this will not delete your Amazon account or any of your settings.
              • Now load Safari (the Apple internet browser) and go to smile.amazon.co.uk.
              • Tap the ‘share’ button on the bottom of the screen.
              • Tap the ‘Add to Home Screen’ icon. You may need to swipe to the left to see this.
              • You will now have an Amazon Smile icon on your home screen which you can use in exactly the same way you used the Amazon App.
